Indulge in the Gluten-Free Options at the Iconic Russian Tea Room - A Century-Old Experience

Immerse yourself in The Russian Tea Room's scenic ambiance while sipping on their brews and nibbling on small sandwiches, all from a sans gluten menu.

Unexpectedly, I find myself nestled in a cozy red-velvet booth, indulging in sparkling apple cider and chamomile tea amidst the elegant backdrop of Soviet-inspired decor. It's a scene I hadn't quite envisioned, yet life has a way of delighting us with its unforeseen twists and turns, and I'm glad it does.

If you're one for aesthetics and feeling like a classical tea-spiller, this is the place to be. (I've never felt more a part of gEn Z until I typed that sentence, but it's true). The scene that surrounds the tea room is stunning, and the cherry on-top to the experience itself.

Since its establishment in 1927, The Russian Tea room has kept their timeless and glamourous vibe, with a lovely menu addition... gluten-free bread! (and vegetarian, if that's your thing).

For $115 per person, the afternoon tea session includes eight sandwiches on GF bread, featuring fillings like shrimp salad, curried chicken salad, and grilled cheese with turkey — a personal favorite.

I tried the chamomile tea — which came seeped in a lovely white pot and a classic Soviet metal tea cup (as pictured above) — as well as the sparkling cider and "sandwich tower," as I call it.

The tower is intended to be eaten from top to bottom, the top having a cucumber slice with cream cheese and caviar, and so on down to the finale. For desert, the gluten-free folk are offered sorbet and a chocolate pyramid, or fresh fruit, depending on your mood. For me, personally, I had a sorbet vibe that day, and the pyramid was delightful.

And, the million-dollar question I'm sure we're all dying to know: the bread was not crumbly and some slices were toasted lightly (even better).

Having the opportunity to enjoy gluten-free eating experiences, like The Russian Tea Room, is something to be valued. Dining within this genre of prix-fixe menus is not something that is typical for GF-restricted people, and until doing some research, I had no idea this option was out there.

The modifications and offers made by The Russian Tea Room makes a century-long New York experience one for all, and they're pretty good at it too. If you enjoy tea and a fun ambiance, this is a 100% recommended place you should find yourself in; Plus, it's nestled right next to Carnegie Hall, more the reason to go and give the gluten-free menu a try.
